The Challenge
Natural gas distribution systems require continuous monitoring to detect and address issues promptly. In southern Tamaulipas, Engie faced the challenge of ensuring that its vast network operated at optimal efficiency and that safety risks, including gas leaks, were minimized. Regular checks and maintenance were essential to keep the infrastructure in top condition, preventing any disruptions in service while safeguarding the community.
Additionally, ensuring the proper functioning of meters and regulators, as well as protecting the network from potential damage caused by external activities, were crucial components of the strategy.
The Solution
To address these concerns, Engie initiated an intensive verification as part of its annual maintenance plan. To execute this plan, Engie required advanced leak detection technology and selected Heath Consultants Discover® AMLD to support this plan.
The specialist team conducted thorough inspections of the natural gas distribution network across southern Tamaulipas. The main objectives were to identify and rectify any presence of gas to assure the correct assets condition.
In addition, Engie maintained close communication with workers involved in excavation projects on public roads, which could potentially impact the distribution network. The company worked alongside the local water authority to train both technical and administrative staff in preventing damage to the infrastructure, emphasizing safety as a top priority.
The initiative deployed 200 technicians on the ground, with 50 support vehicles and up to 85 man-hours of work. The inspection teams were equipped with 45 geolocation antennas and 40 natural gas leak detection devices to ensure comprehensive monitoring.
Using advanced technologies such as Heath’s RMLD-CS portable technology, which detects methane particles per million, and the Discover AMLD, an advanced mobile system designed for detecting methane gas leaks at part-per-billion resolution. These devices enabled Engie to carryout precise and timely inspections, locating any potential issues and allowing for swift intervention.
