The Challenge
ENSTAR encountered major difficulties in effectively surveying critical infrastructure, particularly during natural disasters and emergency situations.Traditional leak survey methods, though reliable in normal circumstances, proved time-consuming and resource-intensive when rapid response was critical.
During one emergency event, ENSTAR deployed their standard leak survey methods to inspect their network. While effective in identifying issues, these methods required over 3,000 man-hours and a month to complete, delaying comprehensive assessment and decision-making. This inefficiency highlighted the need for a faster, cost-effective solution to address the risks to public safety and the environment.
The Solution
Recognizing the need for a faster and more efficient solution, ENSTAR explored innovative leak detection technologies to enhance their emergency response capabilities. After extensive evaluation of AMLD technology and seeking a cost-effective solution, they selected Heath’s Discover Advanced Mobile Leak Detection (AMLD) technology, which stood out for its ability to rapidly and accurately detect leaks.
ENSTAR adopted Discover AMLD as a proactive measure to survey their network daily and during emergency events. This technology not only reduced the time required to cover large areas but also minimized the manpower and resources needed compared to traditional methods.
With advanced open path sensing technology, Discover AMLD allowed for rapid gas detection and more efficient method of critical infrastructure. One unique aspect of their distribution network is the minimal ethane content in their pipeline gas, which allowed Heath to tailor the system to the unique properties of the infrastructure.
